Pa Kua Chang (Baguazhang)

Pa Kua

Pa Kua Chang (which means "Eight Trigram Palm") is a style characterized by evasive movements and angular footwork. Like Tai Chi, it is often considered a "soft" style. The training emphasizes movements at angles rather than straight forward or back. Masters of the style are known for fast footwork which allows them to "disappear" from the focal point of an attack, only to "reappear" behind their opponent.

The origins of the style are shrouded in mystery, but it is certain that it existed in the 19th century. At that time it was being practiced and taught by Dong Hai Chuan, probably the most famous Pa Kua master in the history of the art. Indeed, many practitioners credit him with its invention. Whether or not he invented it, there is no doubt that he contributed much to the art, including our Classical Pa Kua kata.

Our curriculum contains Classical, Eight Animal, Snake, and Dragon empty hand katas, as well as katas for spear, sun-moon fork, and broad sword. The Yin Dagger kata from the White Eyebrow system is related, combining elements of Chen Tai Chi and Pa Kua.
